The Toronto Blue Jays have been baseball’s vagabonds over the past year. Unable to play in Toronto due to the pandemic, they spent the 2020 season in Buffalo. This year, the Blue Jays opened the season in Dunedin, but that was not expected to last for the season.

Indeed, the Blue Jays are on the move again. And once again, they are heading to Buffalo for June 1, where they will play indefinitely until the Canadian government relaxes regulations. In the interim, the Blue Jays Triple-A team will play in Trenton.

Toronto Blue Jays making most of bad situation

The Blue Jays have been the ultimate road warriors since the start of the 2020 season. Despite the obvious disadvantage of playing in an unfamiliar environment, they finished with a winning record and found themselves in the postseason for the first time since 2016.

Even with the upgrades made in Buffalo last year, the Blue Jays still have more work to do. They have to renovate the stadium in order to be in compliance with health and safety regulations mandated for fans to be in the stadium. The bullpens are being moved from the field of play, clubhouses and stadium lights are being upgraded, and the outfield is being re-sodded, amongst other assorted projects.

Although this project is likely to be costly, it will be well worth the expense. There is no telling how long the Blue Jays will be in Buffalo this time, as they may well find Sahlen Field to be their home for the rest of the season. Should the pandemic last into 2022, Buffalo may well be their home to start the season once again.

These upgrades could also help the Blue Jays on the edges of free agency. They may be interested in a veteran or two on a minor league deal, and having those upgraded amenities could make a difference. They will certainly help this year, as the major league squad is set to call Buffalo home once again.
