There was a great deal of derision when the Atlanta Braves decided to bring back Pablo Sandoval. He looked as though he was done in 2020; the bat speed just was not there and was was essentially incapable of playing in the field. Nonetheless, Atlanta saw something in his one game with them in 2020, as they brought him back on a minor league deal.

The fact that Sandoval made the Opening Day roster was a bit of a surprise as well. He could theoretically back up the corner infield spots, and slot in as a designated hitter during interleague play, but he was essentially going to function as a pinch hitter.

Pablo Sandoval making Atlanta Braves look brilliant

Sandoval has succeeded beyond anyone’s expectations in this role. He has just 36 plate appearances, making just two starts in the field, but has made an impact nonetheless. Entering Sunday’s action, he has produced a .290/.389/.677 batting line, belting four homers and driving in ten runs.

He has also had a flair for the dramatic this season. Every single one of those homers have either tied the game or given Atlanta the lead. The Braves have won three of those four games, including Saturday night’s 12 inning marathon that he sent to extra innings with his blast in the bottom of the ninth.

Sandoval has been well worth the contract at this point. He has shown that he is not done after all, that his bat can still make an impact in the correct role. He may not be a starting caliber player any longer, but he has proven to be a valuable piece on the Braves roster.

It is entirely possible that Sandoval proves to be the Braves’ x-factor this year as well. The NL East had been projected to be a tight battle between at least four teams with the Braves looking to win their fourth consecutive division title. Sandoval’s flair for the dramatic and ability to rise up in those moments could prove to be the difference.
