New York Mets worst nightmare may be coming true
The New York Mets made certain to improve their roster this offseason. They added depth to their rotation, improved the lineup, and strengthened the bullpen, adding the pieces that they desperately needed as they look to contend in the NL East. But even with their improvements, the Mets hopes for the season depend on Jacob deGrom.
On Sunday, the Mets’ worst nightmares may have come true. deGrom departed the mound in the top of the sixth after throwing two warmup pitches, accompanied by trainer Brian Chicklo.
New York Mets cannot afford to lose Jacob deGrom
There had been some moderate concern with deGrom before Sunday’s outing. He had missed his previous start on Tuesday, having been scratched due to inflammation in his right lat. deGrom had played catch several times and threw a bullpen session, claiming that he did not feel any ill effects and was ready to go on Sunday.
Even though he had set down the first 12 batters he faced, deGrom did not look right on the mound. He had trouble locating his fastball, something that became more apparent in the fifth inning. deGrom walked three batters in that inning for the first time in five years, but managed to allow just one run as he walked the tightrope.
That tightrope snapped before he faced a batter in the sixth inning. deGrom threw two warmup pitches before Chciklo headed to the mound, departing with the Mets’ ace in tow. At this point, there is no word as to what is affecting deGrom, as to whether or not this is a continuation of his previous lat issue or something entirely different.
If deGrom is facing a serious injury, the Mets postseason aspirations may go with him. Although Carlos Carrasco and Noah Syndergaard will return in the coming months, deGrom is the unquestioned ace of the staff, arguably the best pitcher in baseball. He is the key to the entire puzzle, the reason why the Mets feel that they have an advantage in the NL East.
The New York Mets’ worst nightmare may be becoming reality. Jacob deGrom left his start on Sunday due to injury after having command issues all game.
