For all of the potential in the Los Angeles Angels farm system, there are several gaping holes. The Angels have a distinct lack of catching prospects, as none of their top 30 prospects according to MLB.com are behind the plate. There is an opportunity for an intriguing catching prospect to make an impact.

The Angels may have such a prospect soon. According to reports, the Angels will sign Cuban catcher Jonathan Linares once the next international signing period opens in January 2022.

Los Angeles Angels set to add potential impact prospect

Although he is just 16 years old, Linares could end up making an impact quickly in the Angels system. He is already considered an excellent defensive catcher with a strong arm and excellent glove work.

At the plate, the switch hitting Linares has a solid swing with a natural uppercut. He should eventually grow into more power, especially as his body continues to develop, leading to the hope that he can be a solid all around backstop in Los Angeles.

That does not mean an ascension to the major league ranks will take place shortly after he is signed. Linares will still need to learn the finer points of the position, especially calling a game and managing a pitching staff. He will also need to refine his approach at the plate. That can take time, especially as he adapts to a completely different environment.

Nonetheless, it is easy to understand the excitement that Linares would cause. The raw tools are there for him to be a key piece of the Angels’ future, but he still needs that development time. Patience will be key, but could pay off handsomely a few years down the road.
