Luis Urias came into the majors with high expectations. A two time consensus top 100 prospect, Urias was expected to be a perennial All Star candidate, an excellent contact hitter who could be an excellent top of the order hitter. It was easy to see why the Milwaukee Brewers regarded him so highly, bringing him into the organization as part of the Trent Grisham deal.

That offensive potential is finally starting to manifest. Although Urias’ 86 OPS+ is not exactly anything that will set the world afire, it is far better than anything he has posted in the majors. Nonetheless, his production leaves a lot to be desired.

Time for the Milwaukee Brewers to make a move with Luis Urias

The Brewers could live with Urias’ pedestrian .205/.317/.359 batting line if he was contributing anything defensively. That has not been the case however, as he has cost the Brewers five runs defensively while showing below average range. It is also clear that Urias has lost his confidence defensively, becoming far more tentative.

More Brewers. The worst call of the year. light

It is clear that Urias needs to be sent back to Triple-A. He has had success in the minors, and perhaps revisiting the scene of that success will make a difference. He will be away from the pressure of the majors and a push for the postseason, free to rediscover his touch with the bat and glove no matter how long it takes.

Meanwhile, the Brewers have an option to take over at short. Dee Strange-Gordon has been playing at shortstop in Triple-A this season, getting used to the position once again. He has also hit well thus far, with a .353/.389/.529 batting line in 36 plate appearances.

Obviously, Strange-Gordon is not the long term answer. He may not even be the answer in another month. But Urias is not the answer right now either. Unless the Brewers want to make a trade this early for an upgrade at short, it may be time to bring the long time veteran back to the majors.

Next. Brewers Mount Rushmore. dark

The Milwaukee Brewers need to do something with Luis Urias. He is clearly lost at the major league level and has minimal confidence at present.
