The Chicago Cubs may find themselves with a sudden need for infield depth. Nico Hoerner, who has been a revelation thus far in 2021, suffered a strained hamstring when he tripped over first base on Tuesday night. Although the Cubs are unsure if Hoerner will need a stint on the Injured List, this injury does damage their depth in the middle of the infield.

With that possibility in mind, the Cubs have made a move. Dee Strange-Gordon has signed a minor league deal, his third of the year, and will head to Triple-A.

Chicago Cubs latest rest stop for Dee Strange-Gordon

Strange-Gordon has been racking up the frequent flier miles over the past few months. He had originally signed a minor league deal with the Reds on February 11, but was released when he did not make the Opening Day roster. He was then signed by the Brewers, who released him after trading for Willy Adames.

More Cubs. A tough decision for the fans. light

It is not much of a surprise that Strange-Gordon has bounced around as minor league depth this season. His performance in Seattle, where he posted a .266/.293/.343 batting line with just 55 steals over three years, was not going to generate much interest.

But teams are always looking for depth, especially in the case of a former All Star who can play at multiple positions. Strange-Gordon did show that he might be able to help a major league roster with his performance at Triple-A this season, producing a .333/.375/.500 batting line over 45 plate appearances in Nashville.

Now he gets another chance. The Cubs did have issues at second base before Hoerner solidified the position when he was recalled, and it remains to be seen how long he will be out for. If Strange-Gordon can continue to perform well at Triple-A, he could get another major league opportunity.

Next. Nothing doing on the contract front. dark

Dee Strange-Gordon is now on his third minor league contract of 2021. Maybe this deal with the Chicago Cubs will result in another major league chance.
