Some days, one has to wonder if the Pittsburgh Pirates are intentionally trying to lose games. There are times when they appear to be a Little League team on the diamond, completely overmatched by everyone. Then there are moments when a Little League team would have better fundamentals. One of those moments came during their contest against the Chicago Cubs on Thursday.

Everything began innocently enough. Javier Baez hit a grounder to third for what seemed to be an easy out. And then, all hell broke loose.

Chicago Cubs score run no one could believe

The insanity began when Pirates’ first baseman Will Craig apparently forgot that he could just step on first for the force out. Instead, he attempted to tag Baez, a move that queued up the opening notes of Yakety Sax. Yes, the throw pulled Craig up the line, but he could have raced Baez to the bag and won.

light. More Cubs. Who does a fan root for?

Instead, once Baez stopped and ran back towards home, Allen gave chase. This was the opening that Willson Contreras needed, as he had been completely forgotten about. With all the attention on Baez, he took off for home, sliding under the tag to score the Cubs’ second run of the game.

As for Baez? He hilariously stayed around home plate to call Contreras safe on the play. Then, once the umpire signaled in the affirmative, Baez took off for first once more. Michael Perez fired the ball towards first, where second baseman Adam Frazier was unable to corral the throw as Baez slid in.

With the Cubs bench laughing away, and the ball blissfully heading towards right as Frazier wandered off towards foul territory, Baez did what anyone would do – took off for second. As he slid in, the Pirates’ shortstop made a half-hearted attempt to catch the throw in, with the ball getting past him as well. Fortunately, someone was backing up the play, otherwise, Baez may still be running the bases just like Benny Hill.

To say that this was a Little League play would be an insult to Little League teams. This was a complete breakdown in fundamentals by almost everyone on the roster. The Pirates are not going to win many games, and they cannot afford to give away runs. They especially cannot afford to give away runs in such a horrendously comical manner.
