The New York Mets place atop the NL East is relatively remarkable. Despite fielding what is essentially a Triple-A roster, and an Injured List that has read like an All Star Team at times, the Mets are proving to be amazingly resilient. Their success certainly gives the fanbase hope for what could be once they get healthy.

That is finally beginning to happen. The Mets are set to get back a trio of players on Monday – Pete Alonso, Seth Lugo, and Kevin Pillar.

While James McCann has performed relatively well at first base in Alonso’s absence, he does not provide the same sort of offensive potential as the former All Star. While he has not lived up to his incredible rookie season, Alonso had produced a respectable .236/.336/.433 batting line with six homers and seven doubles in his 149 plate appearances.

Pillar’s potential return on Monday is remarkable. When he was drilled in the face, suffering numerous facial fractures, he was expected to be on the sideline for some time. Instead, he was shagging fly balls over the weekend, leading to the hope that he may be back after just 11 days on the Injured List. Although his .250/.294/.388 batting line may not be stellar, but his quick return would certainly be inspirational.

Lugo has not pitched this season, but will help strengthen a surprisingly solid Mets’ bullpen. Although his 5.15 ERA and 1.364 WHiP may not impress, Lugo was also pressed into action as a starter last season, which skewed those numbers. He has a career 2.53 ERA and a 0.954 WHiP as a reliever, making him the perfect addition for their relief corps.

All these reinforcements will only help the Mets’ position. They remain the only team with a winning record in the NL East, but were hardly in a spot where they seemed capable of remaining atop the division. With this trio set to return, the Mets will be in a much better spot.

The New York Mets are getting back some desperately needed players. As the roster returns to full strength, they can only solidify their place atop the division.
