It is a matter of when, not if, the Colorado Rockies trade Trevor Story. He will be one of the hotter names on the trade block in the coming weeks, and it seems all but certain that he will depart. Story had rebuffed extension talks before, and as the Rockies are finally accepting that they must rebuild, he is easily their best trade chip.

However, when Story was placed on the Injured List with a sore elbow, the Rockies’ worst nightmare was happening. They would have missed their window of opportunity, leaving them without the ability to move their best player for pieces for the future. They can breathe a sigh of relief as his MRI can back positive. Story may even return to the lineup next week.

Colorado Rockies catch break with Trevor Story

Even though the calendar has just turned to June, it is clear that the Rockies are out of the postseason picture. They are already 13 games out of first in the NL West, and with a stacked division, they will need to face reality.

light. More Rockies. An unwillingness to learn from mistakes

Story is not producing at his usual rate this season. He has a disappointing .255/.322/.424 batting line in his 205 plate appearances, hitting five homers and 12 doubles while stealing eight bases. Defensively, he has been just as good as ever, having already saved five runs at short.

If Story returns next week as hoped, he will have just over a month and a half to rebuild his trade stock. His value may be at the lowest point it ever has been, as he is not only coming off of injury, but is also an impending free agent in the midst of a disappointing year. However, his track record indicates that improvements will be coming.

That is really what it comes down to for the Rockies. They need Story to be healthy and producing at his usual rates, not for what he can do for them in the standings, but for what he can do for their farm system. If he returns to form once he is back from the Injured List, he could work wonders for their rebuild.
