The USA Olympic Qualifying Team was a great opportunity for prospects to make an impact. As major league players were not eligible to participate, some of the top prospects in the game were able to make their mark. For a pair of Boston Red Sox prospects, that opportunity was not squandered.

Both Jarren Duran and Triston Casas were able to get a chance to be a part of the starting lineup. They did their part in ensuring that the US entry would move on to Tokyo, and in doing so, cemented their place as a part of the Red Sox future.

Duran posted a .368/.400/.526 batting line in his 20 plate appearances, hitting a double and a triple while striking out four times and drawing a walk. While he will be heading back to Triple-A now that the play-in round is over, it is expected that he will find his way to the majors in relatively short order.

In Duran’s case, the Red Sox have a definite need in the outfield. Franchy Cordero was a disaster in left, and was sent down to Triple-A himself. Duran had posted a .278/.366/.625 batting line in his 82 plate appearances, belting seven homers and four doubles while stealing four bases. Even if he is unable to play center at the major league level, he has the potential to be the answer in left for the foreseeable future.

Casas also impressed during his time on the Qualifying Team. He posted a .400/.471/.533 in 17 plate appearances, hitting two doubles while drawing two walks and striking out twice. He is currently slated to head to Double-A Portland, but that assignment may also be temporary.

As had been the case with Duran, Casas was impressing with the bat before heading to Team USA. He had posted a .328/.400/.552 batting line in his 75 plate appearances, hitting four homers. With his ability to play at either corner infield spot, and Bobby Dalbec‘s struggles this season, Casas may get that bump to Worcester soon enough.
