The Colorado Rockies did not do themselves any favors with the Nolan Arenado fiasco. After signing their cornerstone player to a long term extension, then general manager Jeff Bridich essentially did everything possible to alienate the third baseman before shipping him off to St. Louis.

While Bridich is no longer a part of the Rockies, his treatment of Arenado certainly left a mark on the franchise. With their other star player, Trevor Story, approaching free agency, that has become an issue once again as the shortstop reportedly has no interest in re-signing with the Rockies once his contract comes to an end.

Trevor Story cannot wait to get away from Colorado Rockies

One can understand why he would feel this way. Arenado had been the face of the franchise, easily the best player in team history, and was cast aside without second thought. While baseball is a business, the players are human. They will see how other members of the team are treated and respond accordingly.

Story's impending return good sign for trade value. light. More Rockies

Such is the case here. Story has no reason to trust the Rockies or their interim general manager. Likewise, he has no reason to think that the roster will improve to the point where the team will contend in the near future. And, given the Rockies ineptitude this season, it stands to reason that he will be dealt by the trade deadline, even if the team is not yet willing to discuss trading their shortstop.

Those talks may heat up soon enough. The All Star Game is in Colorado now after it was removed from Atlanta. The Rockies may simply be unwilling to trade their likely representative before that time, giving Story a final chance to be cheered on by his hometown fans.

But one way or another, Story’s time with the Rockies is measured in weeks. Even if he is not traded by the deadline, he can simply reject the Qualifying Offer and enter free agency. As he has no desire to remain in Colorado, it is just a matter of time before he gets his wish and is playing elsewhere.

Trevor Story reportedly has no intention of remaining with the Colorado Rockies beyond this year. Given the state of the franchise, no one can blame him for that stance.
