We have to go all the way back to May 6 in order to find the last time that the Texas Rangers won a game on the road. On that day, they beat the scuffling Twins by a 4-3 score in ten innings, pulling to within a game of .500 on the season. While they would briefly reach .500 three games later, that was essentially the high water mark of the season.

Since that game, the Rangers have been unable to find success on the road. They have had some close calls, such as two walk-off losses in 11 innings, but close does not matter in the standings. Following their 12-1 loss to the Dodgers on Friday, the Rangers have now lost 16 consecutive road games.

Texas Rangers on the cusp of making history

That 16 game losing streak matches the longest in franchise history. Back in 1961, when the Rangers existed as the expansion Washington Senators, they had lost 16 consecutive road games. With another matchup against the Dodgers on tap, and Trevor Bauer on the mound, it is probable that the Rangers will break that franchise record.

Amazingly, this is not the longest road losing streak in the majors right now. The Diamondbacks have been even worse on the road, having lost 19 consecutive road games, with their most recent victory coming on April 25 against the Braves.

Even should the Rangers match the Diamondbacks’ streak of futility, they would not have the major league record. Right now, that dubious distinction is held by the 1943 A’s and the 1963 Mets, both of which lost 22 consecutive road games before getting that elusive victory.

Looking ahead, the Rangers’ schedule does not get much easier. After they finish out their three game set in Los Angeles, they have a quick two game series in Houston. Then, after a ten game home stand, the Rangers are off to Oakland before heading up the west coast to Seattle. This streak may well continue for the foreseeable future.

The Texas Rangers are attempting to avoid setting a franchise record for futility. Considering their opponent, that may be a tall task.
