New York Yankees hoping for best with Luis Severino
The New York Yankees were hopeful that Luis Severino would essentially serve as a trade deadline acquisition. He was working his way back to the majors, finally on the comeback trail after undergoing Tommy John surgery in February 2020.
But those plans hit a major speed bump on Saturday. He had to be helped off the diamond after landing awkwardly, lasting just 1.2 innings before his day came to an abrupt end. It had appeared that he suffered a groin injury, undergoing an MRI on Sunday and will have more testing on Monday.

Severino had looked as though it was just a matter of stretching him out before he could contribute. His fastball had been sitting in the upper 90s, while his offspeed and breaking stuff looked sharp. The Yankees just had to build his pitch count back up.
Now the Yankees have to wonder if this will be another lost season. Severino made only three appearances in 2019 due to shoulder and lat injuries before missing the entirety of the 2020 campaign. With his rehab being underway, the Yankees had hoped that they would have Severino back by the All Star Break.
But that may not happen now. Although there is no indication as to how severe of an injury Severino suffered, it did not look good when it happened. The team will have a better idea once those tests have been completed as to whether or not he will be sidelined again.
Depending on those results, the Yankees’ plans for the deadline may change. As it currently stands, they need help in the rotation and in the middle of their infield. However, they are on the fringes of the playoff chase, and have been slipping further back with each passing week.
The New York Yankees have to hope for the best with Luis Severino. They will hopefully have more clarity in the coming days.
