It is safe to say that the 2021 season has not gone the way that the Houston Astros or Jake Odorizzi had anticipated. Odorizzi was expected to be a key part of the Astros’ rotation, pairing with Zack Greinke to give Houston a pair of experienced starters to lead their young staff. He was supposed to be a key piece as the Astros attempted to take over the AL West once again.

Instead, Odorizzi has struggled in Houston. He had a late start to the year, and has yet to truly find his footing. This has led to a disappointing start to the season thus far, and the Astros searching for ways to get him back on track.

Houston Astros being creative to get Jake Odorizzi on track

Their newest plan will take shape on Tuesday. Lance McCullers will return to the Astros’ rotation on that day, with Odorizzi following in a piggyback role. From that point, the Astros are expected to move forward with a six man rotation, at least temporarily.

Houston needs to do something with Odorizzi. He simply has not been the pitcher he once was, posting a 6.75 ERA and a 1.313 WHiP over his 21.1 innings, striking out 23 batters with eight walks. While his ratios are solid, the five homers that he has allowed have doomed him thus far in 2021.

For the Astros, anything is worth the attempt. Maybe having Odorizzi come in after a few innings, and getting a different perspective, will make a difference. It certainly does not hurt to try something else.

Odorizzi is a longer term investment for the Astros as well. Getting him right this year can make a difference, as he is signed through 2022 with a player option for 2023. Houston will need him to be the player he had been from 2015 through 2019 as they attempt to hold on to the second Wild Card spot.
