For most pitchers, Coors Field is a nightmare come to life. The home of the Colorado Rockies is where pitchers go to die, a place where popups turn into homers and ERAs are as bloated as someone in the before part of a Gas-X advertisement. At least, that is the case for everyone aside from Austin Gomber.

Somehow, Gomber has been able to slay the demon of Coors Field. When he pitches at home, he has turned into an ace, giving the fans hope that they actually got something back for Nolan Arenado.

Colorado Rockies have hope with Austin Gomber

For years, the Rockies have been searching for a pitcher that can lead their rotation. The likes of Mike Hampton and Bret Saberhagen have tried and failed. But there are signs of hope. German Marquez has been a solid arm throughout his career. And now, Gomber is showing signs that he may be able to pitch well at home.

Obviously, this is a small sample size. Five starts, covering a grand total of 28.1 innings, is hardly a large sample size. However, as he does have that 0.95 ERA and a 0.812 WHiP, with 24 strikeouts and ten walks, the Rockies will take any positive signs they can get.

The problem is that he has not been nearly as good on the road. His numbers are solid, as Gomber has a 1.188 WHiP with 51 strikeouts and 13 walks over 48 innings. The problem is that he has posted a 5.06 ERA in those outings, a number that is seemingly not in sync with his performance.

Gomber has been solid for the Rockies overall this season, posting the best ERA amongst their rotation. He and Marquez give the team the potential for a solid 1-2 combination atop their pitching staff, something that the team needs, especially with Jon Gray likely to depart by the trade deadline. He just needs to find that consistency on the road.

Austin Gomber has been impressive for the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field. Maybe someone will be able to tame the best after all.
