When last we saw Bartolo Colon, he was stumbling through two horrendous seasons in 2017 and 2018. The former New York Mets fan favorite just did not have anything left, as the years had caught up to him. Although he did not generate any major league interest over the past three offseasons, Colon was determined to continue his career, signing with the Acereros de Monclova in the Mexican League.

Despite that layoff, Colon has been impressive in Mexico. His latest feat came on Saturday, when he fired a complete game in just 90 pitches for the victory.

New York Mets fan favorite Bartolo Colon still impressing

It was a vintage Colon outing. He threw 70 of hose 90 pitches for strikes, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out seven batters. That performance improved his record to 3-1, to go along with a solid 3.56 ERA and a 1.253 WHiP in his 30.1 innings. Although he has allowed five homers, he has struck out 19 batters with just seven walks, showing that he still has something left in the tank.

Colon’s performance should be drawing attention from major league teams. There are plenty of franchises in need of help in the back of the rotation, including teams with playoff aspirations. As Colon has been pitching in Mexico, he would not need a stint in the minors to be ready as he is already stretched out.

He has stated a preference to return to the Mets to finish his career, something that could be a viable option. Although Noah Syndergaard and Carlos Carrasco will theoretically return, both have had setbacks recently. As good as the Mets’ top three starters have been, Joey Lucchesi and David Peterson do not exactly inspire confidence.

Even though Colon would hardly be a given, he has proven before that he cannot be counted out. He has managed to come back, showing that he still has something left. To this point, he has done just that in Mexico, and may be worth getting another look in the majors.
