The Tampa Bay Rays already had cause to worry about Tyler Glasnow after Monday’s outing. He had pulled himself from the game after four innings, saying that he felt a “tugging” in his elbow during his final few pitches. However, he did not feel any real concern, saying that he removed himself more as a precaution.

However, the Rays and Glasnow received worse news than they could have expected. An MRI revealed a partially torn UCL and a strained flexor tendon, both of which are precursors for Tommy John surgery.

As it currently stands, Glasnow and the Rays are hoping that he can rehab the injury without going under the knife. As he would likely miss the entirety of the 2022 season if he has surgery now, it is understandable that he would attempt the rest and rehab route first. If that is successful, he may be able to return before the end of the season.

More Rays. A positive update on Tyler Zombro. light

Even if that happens, losing Glasnow for this long of a time is a major blow. He had established himself as the Rays latest ace, posting a 5-2 record with a 2.66 ERA and a 0.932 WHiP in his 88 innings, striking out 123 batters with 27 walks. He is not someone that the Rays can afford to lose.

The Rays have essentially personified the ‘Next Man Up’ standard when it comes to Major League Baseball. No matter who leaves the organization, either in trade or as a free agent, they seem to find that needed piece. Despite seeing the likes of Blake Snell and Charlie Morton leave the team, the Rays hold the best record in the majors heading into Tuesday.

But there is a difference between having the offseason to replace someone and trying to overcome the loss of the staff ace during the season. That is particularly the case for a team such as the Rays, who have drastic limitations when it comes to their payroll.
