Jacob deGrom is a walking cheat code for the New York Mets. The problem is it seems there is injury news nearly every time he takes the mound.

That remained the case Wednesday night. deGrom pitched three perfect innings against the Chicago Cubs and had eight strikeouts. He even drove in a run at the plate as his offensive numbers continue to be ridiculous, in a good way. But then the fourth inning rolled around and he was nowhere to be seen.

Mets must be cautious with Jacob deGrom

deGrom is clearly the best pitcher in baseball. Losing him for an extended period of time would doom the Mets, so it will be curious to see if the team wants to shut him down for any amount of time, strictly for precautionary reasons.

There is just no way the Mets can compete for a title without their ace on the mound every five days. The fact he is raking at the plate is simply a bonus.

deGrom already missed time in May and Mets fans are likely worried more missed time will now follow in June. The good  news, for now, is that the injury was deemed to be just soreness.

deGrom knows his body best and it is possible he decided to pull himself just to be safe. It is just a bummer that he couldn’t continue on during a night when it was clear the Cubs offense was not going to touch anything he threw.

Next. Time to pull the plug on Dellin Betances. dark

deGrom himself saying he thinks this soreness is nothing is a huge positive for Mets fans. Getting some tests done should alleviate any lingering concerns, given everything checks out.
