Dellin Betances was a worthwhile gamble for the New York Mets. He had been a dominant reliever for the Yankees before injuries held him to only one appearance in 2019, making him a potential bargain in free agency. The one time Yankees’ Closer of the Future signed with the Mets on a two year deal worth $14 million, with a $1 million player option for 2022. If he was able to return to form, that contract would be well worth every penny.

The problem is that Betances has not been able to stay healthy. Based on his performance during his rehab outing on Wednesday, it is fair to wonder if he has anything left.

New York Mets need to cut bait with Dellin Betances

As it is, that contract has been a disaster. Betances has produced a 7.82 ERA and a 1.974 WHiP in his 12.2 innings, issuing 13 walks while striking out 12 batters. He has also hit three batters and uncorked two wild pitches as he has been entirely unusable when healthy.

The Mets bullpen has been solid this season. Seth Lugo‘s return has solidified the back end of the relief corps, giving the Mets the type of depth they desperately need, especially with questions in the back of their rotation.

Betances is not an upgrade over any of the arms that the Mets currently have in the majors. His inability to get anyone out, either in the minors or at the major league level, will not help him earn a role on a contending team. Add in his decreased velocity, and it is fair to wonder if he has anything left.

The Mets cannot afford to find out. It is clear that they will not be able to receive any value for the money they spent to bring him in. Betances is a sunk cost right now, and at this point, it is better to cut ties than to hope that somehow, he can revert back to form.
