Tampa Bay Rays: Tyler Glasnow brings up valid points about sudden rule change
Tampa Bay Rays ace Tyler Glasnow was looking like a legitimate American League Cy Young contender this season. That was until he suffered a UCL injury this week.
Glasnow immediately explained how he believes this happened because of MLB’s sudden decision to change the rules on foreign substances. An ESPN article featured the quotes from Glasnow, who said he was just using sunscreen and not anything else.
Then came the rule change, which forced the ace to change his grips all of a sudden. The UCL injury followed and he is raising some valid points.
Tyler Glasnow not happy with MLB
The main issue pitchers are upset with right now is the fact the league decided to put these rules in place midway through June. Why would they not wait until the start of next season? MLB always seems to be a reactionary league and this is the latest example.
The league is also equating a substance like Spider Tack with something as common as sunscreen. Glasnow doesn’t say pitchers should freely be allowed to use substances, but it is fair to say the league missed the mark suddenly putting these rules in place.
Why MLB decided to rush this rule into place doesn’t make too much sense. Pitcher injuries are far too common this year and if this rule change causes more, that will be a disaster for the league.
Once again, Glasnow wasn’t saying the rule itself is bad. What he is saying is that it is ridiculous to change the rules in the middle of the season. That is absolutely valid, especially considering how deep we are into the season.
Now the ace has to focus on rehab and fans will be hoping no other pitchers suffer a similar fate due to a change in pitch grip.
