Everyone has their favorite players growing up. For one young girl in the San Diego area, that favorite player happens to be Cincinnati Reds‘ first baseman Joey Votto. On Saturday, she was finally getting to see her favorite in action, only for him to be ejected in the top of the first inning, breaking her heart.

But Votto made it up to her. After the girl’s mother posted about her daughter being upset because he was ejected, Votto reached out and had a specially signed ball delivered to her in the stands.

This may not be the only gift that young Abigail receives. The Reds asked for her address to send more merchandise her way, potentially with more Votto themed goodies. His autographed ball, where he apologized for not playing the entire game, will be a special reminder of her first major league game.

If a young fan is to pick a favorite player on the Reds, Votto is a great choice. A lifelong member of the franchise, he has put together an impressive, albeit underrated, career. Heading into Saturday, Votto had a lifetime .303/.417/.516 batting line, hitting 303 homers and 418 doubles. He is close to reaching the 2000 hit and 1000 RBI plateaus, marks that he should reach this season.

Although he is not the same player he had once been, Votto has still been a decent enough presence in the Reds’ lineup this season. He has produced a .236/.329/.444 batting line with eight homers and six doubles in his 164 plate appearances. Even if he is not a star any longer, he is still a solid player.

He is also a player that the fan base tends to love. Even if former Reds’ broadcaster Marty Brennaman blamed Votto for virtually everything that went wrong with the team, Votto has been a class act, someone who remains a fan favorite. That is certainly the case with one young fan who went to a Padres’ game to see her favorite player.
