Anthony Bender was not a signing that would create headlines for even the most diehard Miami Marlins fans. He was a former 20th round selection in the 2016 MLB Draft, having already been released by two organizations. At 26 years old to start the 2021 season, Bender was likely to slot in the upper minors, possibly getting a look in the majors if he performed well.

Instead, he never pitched in the minors for the Marlins. In fact, since making his debut on May 5, he has had one of the more impressive starts of any pitcher to begin their career.

Anthony Bender could be long term asset for Miami Marlins bullpen

As the Marlins look to build a sustainable contender, finding pieces for the bullpen will be important. Their starting rotation already has the potential to be one of the best in the league, with a strong core and several intriguing pitching prospects waiting in the wings. While it is possible some of those arms could end up in relief, the bullpen will need to be a focus.

More Marlins. Marte's quietly great season. light

Bender is showing that he can be a part of that future. He has allowed just two unearned runs on eight hits and five walks in his 19.1 innings, striking out 23 batters. Opponents are hitting at a .129/.214/.129 clip against him, showing that there is more than just luck at play.

Although he is a right handed pitcher, Bender has been effective against hitters from either side of the plate. Lefties are only producing a .182/.250/.182 batting line in their 24 plate appearances against him, as he is showing the potential to be a weapon regardless of the hitter.

Should Bender continue to dominate in the Marlins’ bullpen, it would not be a surprise to see him get more high leverage work. He has already picked up three holds on the year, and with the Marlins looking for a closer of the future, Bender could find himself in consideration for such a role.
