New York Mets need to engage Marcus Stroman in extension talks
The New York Mets arguably have the three best starting pitchers in baseball this season. The trio of Jacob deGrom, Taijaun Walker, and Marcus Stroman have been a major reason as to why the Mets are atop the NL East and have been able to weather the injury storm.
Although Stroman has been a key part of this group, his future is uncertain. He is slated to be a free agent at the end of this season, and as he has already had a Qualifying Offer placed upon him, cannot be tagged for a second time.
New York Mets need to keep Marcus Stroman
Considering that he is slated to reach free agency, it would make sense for the Mets to engage Stroman’s representatives about a possible extension. However, that has not happened to this point, and based on what owner Steve Cohen said, will not happen until the offseason.
Such a delay could prove to be a costly mistake. Stroman indicated his desire to stay with the Mets by accepting the QO, stating that his decision was made because of the excitement he felt about the change in ownership. The Mets were looking to become a perennial championship contender, and he wanted to be a part of that.
Stroman is certainly living up to his end of the bargain. After not playing in 2020 due to injury and later opting out, Stroman has posted a 2.35 ERA and a 1.043 WHiP over his 84.1 innings, striking out 75 batters with 19 walks. If he continues to perform at this level, his price tag is only going to increase.
It is understandable as to why Cohen would want to wait until after the season to discuss contracts. He and the front office are focused on trying to improve the roster to win a championship this year, and will worry about the future as it happens. However, given how well Stroman fits with the team, and his success this season, he may want to reconsidered in the case of one of the top pitchers in the game this season.
The New York Mets are not planning on engaging Marcus Stroman in extension talks until after the season. This could be a mistake.
