Joey Votto‘s tirade at an umpire on Saturday went viral for reasons no one would have expected. While everyone enjoys a good rant at an umpire, the Cincinnati Reds’ first baseman’s ejection led to a young fan being upset, her reaction at her favorite player being ejected making the rounds on social media. Votto and the Reds made it up to her, and it ended up becoming a wonderful weekend for the family.

Hopefully, they were not planning to see him on Tuesday in Minnesota. Votto was suspended for one game for his tirade, and is serving that on Tuesday.

The fact that the suspension was reduced to one game from two games is a bit of a victory. Likewise, as the Reds game started at 1:10 PM after a night game on Monday, Tuesday was the perfect time to take his punishment. And, with an off day on Wednesday, Votto basically gets two days off to rest.

Of course, Votto gets punished for his tirade, but nothing happens to the umpire. The home plate umpire instigated that outburst, but as is usually the case, there are nothing but crickets coming from the league in regards to the latest ump show.

It is also not the first time a member of the Reds was suspended for virtually no reason whatsoever. Nicholas Castellanos was suspended for flexing over the pitcher that hit him with a pitch earlier in the inning, even though he was not a part of the shoving match that erupted afterwards.

The days off will only help Votto anyway. Expecting him to play so early in the day after a night game, even though he is a first baseman, may have been questionable at best. The years are starting to catch up to him, and Tuesday may have been a maintenance day anyway.
