Let’s take a look at some of the more interesting accomplishments around MLB over the past week.

The 2021 season is going strong. With that in mind, here are some of my favorite statistics from the past week in MLB.

Jacob deGrom

The two-time Cy Young award winner should be making space for a third. He dropped his season ERA to 0.50 (not a typo) with five shutout innings against the Braves on Monday. deGrom is 7-2 on the season and has allowed just 27 hits and ten walks in 72 innings of work–a 0.51 WHIP.

deGrom has an ERA+ of 772 (also, not a typo). The highest ERA+ of any qualified pitcher in a non-shortened season was 291, set by Pedro Martinez in 2000. deGrom’s is almost three times better than the best ever.

One more deGrom note–this time a tad more basic. deGrom has allowed four earned runs all season.  At the plate, he’s driven in six. Here’s another way to phrase it.  deGrom has more RBI (6) than earned runs allowed (4).

There’s only one word to say about that.

MVP.

More. Second generation players ruling MLB. light

Mike Tauchman

The Giants’ 30-year outfielder had one of the weirdest games in baseball history on Wednesday. He homered in a 9-3 victory against the Angels, but also struck out five times. He became just the fifth player in the modern era (since the start of 1900) with a homer and five-or-more strikeouts in the same game. He joins Dexter Fowler (2019), Brian Dozier (2017), Sammy Sosa (2000), and Ray Lankford (1998).

Andrew McCutchen

The 13-year veteran hit a pinch-hit grand slam on Wednesday against the Nationals. McCutchen is the third former MVP to hit a pinch-hit grand slam in Phillies’ history. He joins Jimmie Foxx (1945) and Ryan Howard (2007) as the only ones to do so. Foxx won three MVPs in his career (1932-33 and 1938), while Howard won the 2006 National League MVP.

Next. An awful fourth true outcome. dark

Underrated Alvarez

Yordan Alvarez has continued to rake this season.  He’s batting .306 with eleven home runs and 42 RBI in 61 games in 2021.  In fact, Wednesday was Alvarez’s 150th career game.  He has a .600 SLG with 39 HR, 124 RBI in those first 150 contests.
