Colorado Rockies: Trevor Story in Home Run Derby presents awkward situation
The situation with Trevor Story and the Colorado Rockies is a weird one after the team shipped off Nolan Arenado earlier this year. Story is a star shortstop in the final year of his contract, and he likely does not want to re-sign if he fears a trade could be coming soon after.
He also remains in the thick of trade rumors and will continue to be in the rumor mill up until the trade deadline at the end of July. But that won’t stop Story from putting on a show in Colorado. In fact, he announced he is taking part in the 2021 Home Run Derby that will take place at Coors Field. Are fans in store for an awkward situation?
Trevor Story could show up as a member of a new team
The Home Run Derby is scheduled nearly three weeks before the trade deadline. So it is possible Story takes part as a member of the Rockies, only to be traded a few weeks later. However, imagine if he is traded before and shows up as a member of a new team.
The shortstop being chosen for the event is clearly because it is taking place in Colorado. MLB would be dealing with a somewhat hilarious disaster if the Rockies decide to ship Story off before July 12.
A more likely scenario is the Rockies continuing to field offers, seeing how desperate teams out there get in terms of trade packages. Because as of right now, it would be a shock to see him stay in Colorado past the deadline. There is just too much risk involved for the team in terms of re-signing him, and he could also re-sign in the offseason after a big trade takes place. That is unlikely, but is technically possible.
So for now, Story is in the Home Run Derby as a Rockie. If that changes, let the Rockies-themed trolling ensue.
