In the first of what could be many trades over the next 30 days, the Toronto Blue Jays and Miami Marlins strike first.

Outfielder Corey Dickerson was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays along with reliever Adam Cimber and cash. The Marlins will receive infielder Joe Panik and a prospect in Andrew McInvale. The Blue Jays made the news official Tuesday afternoon.

Blue Jays add reinforcements well before trade deadline

The 32-year-old outfielder, Dickerson, recently went on the injured list but there is zero concern for him getting back to the field. Across 224 plate appearances, Dickerson has slashed .260/.321/.377 which is a bit lower than his career average.

The left fielder will provide a lefty bench bat for the Blue Jays and will not crack the starting lineup unless there is an injury. Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Randal Grichuk, and Teoscar Hernandez are currently patrolling the outfield for the Blue Jays with George Springer also available for defensive purposes.

Infielder Joe Panik heads to the Marlins after slashing .246/.293/.351 with the Blue Jays across 123 plate appearances. The 30-year-old utility man can play second, third, first and has even dabbled at short last year. This will enable the Marlins to gain some more flexibility throughout the season.

One of the main prizes of this trade is reliever Adam Cimber. The right-handed relief pitcher is in his fourth season and fourth organization. After spending 2018 with San Diego Padres and Cleveland Indians, Cimber made his way to Miami. This year, in 33 appearances, Cimber has a 140 ERA+ along with a 3.32 FIP and 1.194 WHIP — all career bests thus far.

Cimber features two pitches; a 87 mile per hour fastball and a 78 mile per hour slider. About 65 percent of the time, Cimber is throwing his fastball. Cimber will help with a pitching staff that is very good but not elite.

24-year-old Andrew McInvale was drafted in the 37th round of the 2019 draft by the Blue Jays out of Liberty University. Across two levels in 2021, he has 15 appearances with a 1.176 WHIP and an impressive 12.4 K/9 ratio.

McInvale was at Double-A New Hampshire with the Blue Jays and should be placed at the same level within the Marlins organization. However, by being part of the Marlins organization, McInvale’s debut may be sped up.
