Although the Chicago White Sox are clearly the class of the AL Central, they still have areas of need. Second base is a particular concern as Nick Madrigal has been lost for the season. Since his injury, the White Sox have attempted to patch the position together, using Danny Mendick and Leury Garcia in an attempt to find some degree of competence.

Understandably, the White Sox are looking to improve at the position. They have their sights set high, as they are reportedly showing serious interest in Rockies’ shortstop Trevor Story, with the idea of moving him to second.

Chicago White Sox aiming high for upgrade at second

Story would seem to be an interesting fit on paper. The White Sox are clearly set at shortstop, with Tim Anderson the present and future of the position. As he is under team control through 2024 due to a pair of team options, there is no reason to expect that he would need to be replaced.

While Story would be a clear upgrade defensively, that is not being considered. Instead, Story, a Gold Glove caliber shortstop who led the NL with 15 runs saved in 2019, would be shifted to second base. He has not appeared at the position since 2015, when he saw 24 games of action at the keystone in the minors.

Given his defensive prowess at short, Story should acclimate well to second base if the White Sox were to acquire him. It is less demanding defensively, allowing someone with his instincts and ability to be a true asset at the position. Of course, that argument should be made as it comes to Anderson in an effort to help the White Sox defense, but that is apparently not being given any consideration.

For the White Sox, this is a matter of improving the lineup. With Luis Robert and Eloy Jimenez both expected back before the end of the season, Chicago’s offense could be frightening come the postseason. Adding Story to that group would only make the team that much more dangerous.

The Chicago White Sox are aiming high in their quest to find a second baseman. According to reports, they are pursuing Trevor Story to be that upgrade.
