New York Mets hope to have Noah Syndergaard back for September
Sometimes, all it takes is one player to make a difference. That late season acquisition can push a team to a postseason berth or improve their seeding over the final few months. The New York Mets are hoping that will be the case with Noah Syndergaard when he eventually returns from the Injured List.
Syndergaard has been playing catch on flat ground for approximately a week, and should progress to the mound soon. As it is, the Mets are targeting September 1 for his return to the majors.
New York Mets have options with Noah Syndergaard
As Syndergaard is working his way back from Tommy John surgery, and has already dealt with setbacks, it will be interesting to see how they choose to utilize him if he returns. There may not be enough time to truly stretch him out as a starter, and his 100 MPH fastball could be a weapon out of the bullpen.
If he is healthy, there is no question that Syndergaard could be a major addition over the final month of the season. He has a career 3.31 ERA and a 1.161 WHiP, having struck out 775 batters with just 166 walks in his 716 innings. He could be a difference maker regardless of his role.
However, by the time he returns to the Mets, it will be nearly two full years since his last major league game. Although they hope that he will be able to take a spot in the rotation and help improve what is already a strength for the team, that may not be possible. It will also be difficult for Syndergaard to provide the same level of production in that final month as he has over his career.
Nonetheless, his return should be a major boost for the franchise. The Mets do have questions in the back of their rotation, with Syndergaard potentially as a part of the solution. Likewise, despite how strong the bullpen has been, he could be a major upgrade in one or two inning bursts if they take that route. But it all depends on whether or not he can be healthy enough to rejoin the team.
The New York Mets are hoping that Noah Syndergaard can return to the majors on September 1. He could be a key addition if that happens.
