As the Miami Marlins look to come out of their rebuild, they need to find pieces that they can use as building blocks. Those players would typically be expected to emerge from the minor leagues, but the right veterans, either on their roster or acquired in free agency, can make a difference. Teams will often sign those key veterans just as they feel that they are emerging from their rebuild in order to have them in place when the time is right.

The Marlins have seemingly identified one of those pieces that they want to build around. According to reports, they have reached out to Starling Marte about a long term deal as they look to lock in their centerfielder.

Miami Marlins hoping to keep Starling Marte for long haul

The interest is mutual. Marte had indicated that he wanted to remain with the Marlins for the long term as well, as he wants to be a part of the future that they are building. With their crop of talented young arms, it is easy to dream on a bright future in Miami.

Although Marte has missed time due to injury, he has easily been the Marlins’ best hitter this season. His 138 OPS+ entering Monday is the best on the team, as he has posted a solid .296/.403/.456 batting line with six homers, seven doubles, and 13 steals in his 201 plate appearances.

Marte would also provide a bit of stability in an area that the Marlins desperately need it. Their outfield is unsettled at best, with questions at every position going forward. Having their centerfielder locked in for the next few years would help solve part of that puzzle.

But it is a matter of finding the right dollar amount to make this happen. Marte’s career season is coming at the right time, but as he will turn 33 years old before the end of the year, one has to wonder if the Marlins will be willing to match his potential price tag. In this case, it may be worth more than his future production to ensure that he remains as a part of the franchise.
