Jacob deGrom was on the mound Wednesday afternoon for the New York Mets and did the unthinkable. He allowed two earned runs.

That raises deGrom’s ERA to 1.08 on the year and Mets fans have to be worried. Of course, we are only kidding. The ace remains nearly unstoppable and added 10 strikeouts in his seven innings of work against the Milwaukee Brewers.

deGrom is already a legitimate MVP candidate in addition to a lock for the National League Cy Young Award, so it was only fair to assume he would start for the NL in the All-Star Game. Instead, he is making the wise move to stay home.

Jacob deGrom not taking part in 2021 All-Star Game

Mets fans should honestly be thrilled about this news. The ace, who has missed time with injuries this year, is taking the break to spend time with family and just relax. That is much better than flying out to Denver and, by the time he gets home, having no time at all to rest his arm.

The All-Star Game is only an exhibition now, so it makes zero sense for deGrom to play in the game. His focus is on continuing his current legendary season and helping the Mets get to the World Series.

The list of special things he has done so far in 2021 is almost endless. Perhaps the most impressive is the fact he is now at 1,500 career strikeouts. However, his 1.08 ERA continues to stand out and proves he is almost unfair to hit against.

The Mets don’t need deGrom to pitch in the All-Star Game. They need him for the remainder of the season and to be healthy in October. That could mean further rest throughout the year if the Mets are able to clinch a playoff spot early.

While some athletes have egos to uphold, deGrom is making the smart move to stay home.
