The time has come for Vidal Brujan. The clock for the Tampa Bay Rays‘ latest top prospect has been ticking over the past few weeks, becoming louder day by day. As the offense has continued to struggle, Tampa Bay has needed to find a spark anywhere possible to continue to contend for a playoff spot.

Enter Brujan. He will be part of the roster on Wednesday, nominally as the Rays’ 27th player, although he is expected to remain in the majors beyond that one day.

The Vidal Brujan Era to begin for the Tampa Bay Rays

Brujan has become the second highly touted Rays prospect to head to the majors recently. Wander Franco, the universally accepted top prospect in baseball, has already made his debut. The Rays latest top prospect will get the chance to reunite with his Triple-A double play partner.

This promotion is certainly well deserved. Brujan had posted a solid .259/.344/.471 batting line in 216 plate appearances for the Durham Bulls, hitting nine homers and 11 doubles while stealing 15 bases. He has also done a great job in terms of his batting eye, drawing 25 walks with just 34 strikeouts.

While he is not nearly the prospect that Franco is, Brujan had been considered a univeral top 100 prospect in his own right. His excellent speed and ability to control the strike zone make him a perfect candidate to hit near the top of the order, even if he does not fulfill that expectation immediately. Add in his solid power, and Brujan could be another weapon in the Rays lineup.

They certainly need him to be. Their struggles have led to their falling from atop the AL East to barely hanging on to the top Wild Card spot. Although it puts him in a tough spot, and puts high expectations squarely upon him, the Rays believe that he can be that player.
