It is clear that the Colorado Rockies are in no position to contend in 2021. With a 40-51 record heading into the second half of the season, 18 games out of first, the Rockies need a miracle to reach the postseason. With several impending free agents, this is the time to start selling and build for the future.

But the Rockies front office just does not want to hear it. Interim general manager Bill Schmidt continues to toe the delusional company line, saying that the Rockies will not be the farm team for the rest of the majors.

Colorado Rockies leadership continues delusional mindset

One can understand the reluctance in trading Trevor Story. After all, the Rockies were eviscerated for their return when Nolan Arenado was sent packing. As Schmidt is essentially auditioning for the permanent role, he cannot afford to make a mistake at the deadline.

But there has to be a time when reality sets in. Story has continually rebuffed any attempts to be signed to a long term extension and is seemingly counting down the days until he is able to leave Colorado behind. This is a team with no direction, a refusal to spend in free agency, and yet has grandeurs of adequacy despite the evidence staring at them from the NL West standings.

Yes, it is a nice sentiment that the Rockies want to hold on to their players. And it is a sentiment that makes sense should the Rockies get to a point where they are competitive once again. But that is not now, and it does not seem likely to happen in the near future.

For now, the Rockies need to do what is required to potentially compete in the future. Clearly, what they have done recently is not working at all. It is time for a change, and that change starts with trading Story. Maybe the Rockies can eventually get to the point where they are no longer a minor league franchise at the major league level, but that would involve competence in the front office.

The Colorado Rockies are still adamant that Trevor Story is not going anywhere. Once again, they continue to show their delusional mindset.
