Chicago White Sox sign Lance Lynn to extension
Lance Lynn was expected to be a key part of the Chicago White Sox rotation this season. His acquisition from the Rangers indicated that the White Sox were ready to take that next step, no longer content to contend for a postseason berth. Instead, they had their sights set on winning championships.
Lynn has now become another piece for the long haul. He has signed a two year extension worth $38 million, which also includes a team option for the 2024 season.
Lance Lynn has been what Chicago White Sox hoped for
It is fair to say that Lynn has been more than the White Sox could have hoped for. One of the favorites for the AL Cy Young award, he has posted a 9-3 record with a 1.99 ERA and a 1.037 WHiP in his 90.2 innings entering Saturday, striking out 105 batters with 31 walks. It is fair to say that he has established himself as the White Sox ace this season.
His impressive season came at the perfect time for the White Sox. Both Lucas Giolito and Dylan Cease have not performed to expectations, leaving a gaping hole atop the rotation. Lynn’s performance has helped the White Sox to the lead in the AL Central and a likely berth in the postseason.
This extension also provides a bit of stability for Lynn. The White Sox were his fifth team in the past five seasons as he has been in demand by teams looking to contend. That was even the case during his time with the Rangers, as they were looking to rebuild their rotation around Lynn.
The extension also locks in another piece of the core for the next few years. Between other extensions and free agent signings, the White Sox have the majority of their key pieces signed through the 2023 season. 2021 is not going to be their hurrah before fading back to the pack.
