Miami Marlins: Starling Marte now likely to be traded
The Miami Marlins are looking for pieces to build around as they look to come out of their rebuild. Starling Marte, meanwhile, wants to be a part of that future, indicating his desire to sign an extension. In theory, it seemed to be a matter of time before the two sides were able to make something work.
But that may not be the case any longer. According to reports, Marte turned down the Marlins’ offer, making it likely that the outfielder will be dealt before the trade deadline.
Miami Marlins offer to Starling Marte questionable at best
While Marte was looking to remain with the Marlins, he was eyeing a three year extension worth in the neighborhood of $50 million. Miami, meanwhile, has reportedly offered a three year deal worth $30 million. Clearly, the two sides have quite the gulf between them.
Although Marte has missed time this season, he has still been the Marlins’ best player in terms of the lineup. He has produced a .287/.391/.446 batting line in his 239 plate appearances entering Sunday, hitting seven homers and nine doubles while stealing 18 bases. He is the type of player that the Marlins should be looking to build around, regardless of the cost.
However, that does not seem likely to be the case given the difference in value the two sides have on Marte’s services. He would presumably become the top outfielder on the trade block, a viable five tool option who could make a drastic difference in a team’s postseason hopes.
In that way, Marte could become a key part of the Marlins’ future after all. He should bring back an impressive prospect haul, allowing the Marlins to accelerate the rebuilding process. While it is possible that the two sides could find a middle ground, that no longer seems likely to happen.
Starling Marte has turned down the Miami Marlins offer for an extension. At this point, it is likely that the former All Star is traded away.
