The New York Mets have been decimated by injuries this season. Seemingly every week, a key part of their roster lands on the Injured List, with no end in sight. With the latest injuries to Francisco Lindor and Jacob deGrom, the Mets have to feel as though they have done something to anger the baseball gods.
However, reinforcements are starting to arrive. The Mets received good news on Monday as it is possible that Carlos Carrasco will finally make his debut with the team on Sunday.
Carlos Carrasco may finally debut for New York Mets
After watching their pitching depth completely crumble over the past few years, the Mets thought they had the right fit with Carrasco. He was nominally their fifth starter entering the season, the type of piece that would make an already dominant rotation that much better.
Instead, Carrasco has been sidelined due to a torn hamstring that has kept him out all season. The Mets had been able to get by to this point in the season due to the tremendous showing of the top three in the rotation, but deGrom’s injury certainly hurts their chances going forward.
While Carrasco is not even close to being in the same class as deGrom, he has been a solid middle of the rotation arm throughout his career. He has a 3.77 ERA and a 1.196 WHiP over his 1242.1 innings, striking out 1305 batters with just 321 walks. Although he has never made the All Star Game, Carrasco led the AL with 18 wins in 2017, and when healthy, has been a solid part of the rotation.
The Mets could certainly use that production now. Those injuries have kept them from pulling away in the NL East, and the implosion of the pitching staff to begin the second half has been concerning. Carrasco may not be the solution to all of the Mets’ problems, but his return would make a major difference.
The New York Mets are finally getting some positive news on one of their injured players. Carlos Carrasco may be back by the end of the week.
