Chicago White Sox slugger Yermin Mercedes, currently with the team’s Triple-A club, shocked the baseball world Wednesday by seemingly announcing his retirement on Instagram. This came out of nowhere and the team made it clear they did not exactly know what was going on.

Well, it is 24 hours later and that all appears to be a false alarm.

Yermin Mercedes is not retiring

Mercedes himself took to Instagram to announce his decision and deleted his previous post.

Now it is very easy for those on social media to poke fun at Mercedes about this decision. However, it is clear something is wrong that led him to make his retirement post in the first place. His state of mind should be kept in the collective mind of fans and the White Sox organization.

But we don’t want to dive too deep there, as this is something Mercedes will be dealing with. Instead, the good news here is that one of MLB’s top stories in 2021 is not leaving the game suddenly.

Mercedes had a hot start to the season and was a fan favorite all around the league. Then came Tony La Russa bashing him for hitting a home run, seemingly starting a fall that has led him to Triple-A.

Yet Mercedes is no stranger to the minors and should realistically be in line for a promotion if he keeps up the good work. He is slashing .298/.365/.632 in 15 Triple-A games this season.

Mercedes is not retired and that is great news for him, fans, and the White Sox. But please remember to think before jumping to make jokes about his situation on social media.
