Cleveland Indians have now become the Cleveland Guardians
It has been a long wait to see what the new name would be for the Cleveland Indians baseball team, and at long last, we got our answer and a new logo.
On Friday, the franchise announced that the team would be shifting its name to the Cleveland Guardians. Additionally, the franchise will retain the same color scheme that they had with the previous name.
To be fair, that’s not a bad name, especially when you have someone famous like Tom Hanks introducing the name, as he did in a video released by the club welcoming the new name and reminiscing on their history.
The new name has been in the works for some time after several months of controversy surrounding the team’s name and original Chief Wahoo logo. Moreover, other franchises with Native American heritage have had to switch their names, notably the Washington Redskins, now known as the Washington Football Team.
The fans, however, had mixed results when hearing about the new name. Some have found it positive, while others have, well, to put it lightly, not so much.
The Cleveland Guardians will take some time to get used to, but it’s an interesting choice that makes sense.
Baseball history in Cleveland has had its shares of ups and downs. In terms of their greatest moments, they hold the longest winning streak in American League History at 22 straight victories and have appeared in the World Series six times, with two championships to show for it.
However, there have been several years of disappointment, highlighted by the fact that the franchise has not won a World Series since 1948. They came close most recently in 2016, only to fall short in seven games to the Chicago Cubs. Additionally, in 2007, up 3-1 in the American League Championship Series, Cleveland lost their way and fell to the Boston Red Sox.
Maybe a new name can bring forth a new era of change? Only time will tell. For now, the hardest challenge will likely be getting used to saying Cleveland Guardians as opposed to Cleveland Indians.
