Minnesota Twins reportedly discussing Jose Berrios trade
The Minnesota Twins had been insistent that they would not trade players that were still under team control. As the Twins core is still solid, and they are just a year removed from winning the AL Central, such a plan made sense, particularly as they had looked to lock in those players with long term extensions.
But that has changed. The Twins are now listening to offers for those players under team control, with Jose Berrios now reportedly on the block.
Minnesota Twins could jumpstart rebuild with Jose Berrios trade
It is not a surprise that virtually any team that finds themselves in contention would be interested in Berrios. He has put together another typically solid campaign, posting a 3.48 ERA and a 1.022 WHiP in his 121.2 innings, striking out 126 batters with 32 walks. Berrios could be a gamechanger for the right team.
Understandably, the Twins are shooting for the moon when it comes to a return for Berrios. They have reportedly asked for two top 100 prospects and a per-arbitration player for his services as they are looking to quickly reload in an attempt to contend in 2022. Such a move makes sense, as the rest of the division, outside of the White Sox, is still in rebuild mode.
Likewise, it makes sense that any contending team would want Berrios. He has established himself as a solid second or third starter, someone that can be an asset for a playoff team. Even if he is not quite an ace caliber pitcher, he is someone that can instantly solidify any rotation.
Berrios instantly becomes one of the top pitchers available, and perhaps the best pitcher without injury concerns. His health, and ability to slot directly into a rotation, could improve what the Twins receive for his services. He will have a robust market even with the Twins’ high asking price.
The Minnesota Twins are asking for a lot if they are going to trade Jose Berrios. They very well may get the type of package they are asking for.
