There is no question that Max Scherzer would be the best pitcher available if the Washington Nationals put him on the trade block. Even with his recent injury issues, Scherzer is the type of arm that could change the balance of any chase for the postseason, provided that he would waive his no-trade clause.

That may not be an issue, depending on the potential destination. Scherzer is reportedly willing to waive his ability to block a trade, provided he heads to the west coast.

Washington Nationals can impact postseason with Max Scherzer deal

Sending Scherzer to the west coast would have significant implications on the postseason chase. With the NL West being as tightly contested as it currently is, if any of the Giants, Dodgers, or Padres land the Nationals’ ace, they could completely change the complexion of the division.

The same can be said with the AL West. Although the A’s are prioritizing their bullpen, Scherzer would give them the ace they are sorely lacking. As Oakland has struggled to get past the Wild Card Game, in part due to their lack of a top of the rotation arm, Scherzer could change that narrative.

Likewise, the Mariners could make a move to land the Nationals’ ace. While they are looking for players that are still under team control, adding an ace of Scherzer’s caliber would instantly transform their rotation. Seattle could even look to get that infield help they covet by going after Trea Turner in the same deal.

In the end, it all comes down to Scherzer. His decision whether or not to waive his no-trade clause will have a direct impact upon the chase for the postseason, and could determine whether or not a team even reaches the playoffs.
