The New York Yankees have been expected to make their presence felt at the trade deadline. With holes throughout the roster, and a mandate to win, general manager Brian Cashman should be a busy man. However, all that the Yankees have done is to send a pair of relievers to the Reds for a Player to be Named Later.

Considering the players that have already been traded, it is a surprise that the Yankees have not been more active. However, that may end up being the case through the deadline, as other teams are not impressed with their farm system.

New York Yankees may not have pieces to improve roster

As it is, the Yankees have already been spurned by two players that could have helped their roster. Max Scherzer has said that he would veto any trade that involved him being sent to either the Mets or the Yankees. Starling Marte was sent to the Oakland A’s when the Yankees refused to part with Anthony Volpe.

This really should not be much of a surprise. Aside from Jasson Dominguez, the Yankees may not have much in the way of an impact prospect in their system. Deivi Garcia and Luis Gil have struggled with their command, with Garcia being hit hard in Triple-A. Oswald Peraza has excellent speed and is considered to be a brilliant defensive player, but there are major questions as to whether or not he will ever hit. Clarke Schmidt is older for a prospect and cannot stay healthy.

And it really goes downhill from there. But this should not be much of a surprise. The Yankees had gutted their farm system to add pieces over the years, and simply have not found a way to replace those players. Additionally, those players they have added have been imperfect fits, leaving the Yankees top heavy in terms of payroll and without any margin for error.

As the feeling around the league is that the Yankees farm system is not nearly strong enough to land top tier talent, it may be a long trade deadline. The Yankees may well add some players to help their quest to return to the postseason, but to expect any major additions could be foolhardy.

The New York Yankees are hoping to cure their ills at the trade deadline. Considering that opposing teams do not regard their farm system highly, that may not happen.
