The Texas Rangers find themselves in a difficult position with Joey Gallo. He would fetch a strong return on the trade front before the deadline, especially with teams looking for outfield help. Gallo’s power bat would certainly play up in many stadiums, and with teams such as the Yankees in desperate need of an outfielder, the Rangers could find themselves with quite a haul.

However, there is pressure both within and outside the organization to keep Gallo and give him a long term extension. The Rangers are attempting to do just that, as he reportedly has an offer on the table that has been described as “ridiculously overpaid.”

While the exact details of the extension have not been revealed, the expectation is that it would be beyond what the Twins offered Byron Buxton. He had turned down a seven year deal worth $80 million, not including incentives, despite having managed just one healthy season in his career thus far.

Gallo has put together a typically solid season. He has posted a .223/.379/.490 batting line in his 388 plate appearances, hitting 25 homers. He has continued to be the epitome of the Three True Outcome player, leading the majors with 74 walks while striking out 125 times.

But Gallo is also more than a power bat who takes a lot of pitches. He has been a solid outfielder over his career, capable of playing all three outfield position, as well as first and third. Gallo won a Gold Glove in 2020, and over the past two seasons, his 27 runs saved in right are the most in the American League.

That overall package would make him an attractive piece in trade offers. Likewise, it is understandable as to why the Rangers would want to lock him up for the long term. However, there are limits as to what Texas should spend to keep him in town. The type of contract that is being speculated upon could be an albatross in the very near future.
