In theory, Trey Mancini would be a strong trade chip for the Baltimore Orioles. His ability to play at first and either corner outfield position would make him an asset for multiple contenders. Add in the fact that he is still under team control, and Mancini could fetch a decent haul of prospects for the Orioles.

However, that ignores what Mancini means to the organization. As such, the Orioles are reportedly rejecting calls on both their inspirational leader and John Means.

Baltimore Orioles right to keep Trey Mancini

For a team that is still in the midst of a rebuild, and is looking to add pieces for the future, Mancini would be someone that would make sense to trade. He has produced a solid .265/.336/.483 batting line in his 414 plate appearances, hitting 19 homers and 22 doubles. With Ryan Mountcastle essentially filling those same positions, the Orioles could get younger while adding more prospects and cutting payroll.

But there are some things that go beyond the spreadsheet and the typical numbers. Such is the case with Mancini. His return from Stage 3 colon cancer has made him an inspiration, not just in the Orioles’ clubhouse, but around the game. He is the type of leader that a young, rebuilding franchise would want in the locker room, teaching the youngsters how to be major league players.

That leadership, and the inspiration that he provides, are worth more than whatever trade value he may have. Other teams will not value Mancini in the same way that the Orioles do, as they will just be looking at the upgrade in the lineup. Even if his production can be replaced, what he means to the team cannot.

As Mancini is still under team control, it would make sense for the Orioles to keep him on the roster. Likewise, it would not be surprising at all if they were to hand him a long term extension, locking him in and making him a cornerstone for the future.

The Baltimore Orioles are not listening to offers on Trey Mancini. Considering what he means to the organization, that is the correct call to make.
