It has been years since Joey Votto was considered to be a viable slugger. He had two seasons with over 30 homers, back in 2010 and 2017. The Cincinnati Reds‘ first baseman was still a decent player, but at 37 years old, appeared to be running out the clock on a solid career.

Father Time forgot to tell Votto that is how the world works. On Friday, he homered for the seventh consecutive game, extending his team record and leaving him one away from the major league mark.

Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto is in another zone

Votto has been on an impressive power surge lately. He has homered nine times in his past seven games, helping the Reds to win five of those games. After hitting just 38 homers combined over the past three seasons, Votto has 21 thus far, and is on pace to hit 32 homers on the year.

He has also solidified his place in MLB history. While Votto will be remembered for his impressive on base ability, one of six players to lead his league at least seven times in the category, he has a spot in the power side of the ledger as well.

The list of players to homer in seven consecutive games is a mix of Hall of Famers and players who had that as their one career defining moment. Votto now joins Jim Thome, Kendrys Morales, Barry Bonds, and Kevin Mench as the players to homer in seven games. He is also one away from tying Dale Long, Don Mattingly, and Ken Griffey Jr. for the all time record.

Votto has admitted that he has been looking to hit more homers lately. That change in approach has certainly worked to his benefit, as he has ten hits in those seven games, with nine leaving the yard. If the Reds are going to claw their way back into the postseason chase, having Votto re-emerge as a power threat will go a long way to making that happen.
