Back in the olden days, there was the saying that one could not tell the players without a program. Names on jerseys were not prevalent back in those days, so sometimes, the program was needed, especially after trades, when someone new may have a familiar number. The Chicago Cubs are working to bring those days back.

The Cubs announced their lineup for Friday’s game against the White Sox, and it is one where even the most die-hard fan may struggle to recognize most of the names for the starters.

Chicago Cubs lineup a list of players no one has heard of

One has to feel bad for Kyle Hendricks. He may well be looking at the team behind him and only recognize Ian Happ and Matt Duffy. Otherwise, one could forgive him if he felt that he was making a rehab start in the minors based on the lineup.

It was expected that the Cubs lineup would look much different after the trade deadline. Franchise cornerstones, such as Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant, and Javier Baez, were traded away as the rebuild began in earnest. Injuries have also caused havoc on the roster, knocking out those who remain.

That combination has led to the lineup being sent onto the diamond on Friday, leaving Cubs fans scratching their heads in confusion. At least Rafael Ortega has played well in a backup role, posting an .891 OPS. Frank Schwindel has hit for power in the minors. And Hendricks has pitched relatively well after a slow start to the season, so many he can shut down the White Sox.

It would be one thing if the Cubs had a bunch of prospects getting a chance to show that they can be major league caliber players. The problem is that most of the lineup is already in their 30s, a collection of backup players and Triple-A depth that has not performed. It will be a long end to the 2021 season.
