Colorado Rockies investigating racist incident at Coors Field

There was an ugly moment during the top of the ninth inning at Coors Field on Sunday. As Lewis Brinson was batting against Colorado Rockies pitcher Ben Bowden, one could clearly hear someone in the stand shouting racial slurs at the Marlins’ outfielder. It is the type of incident that no one should have to go through, especially at a major league ballpark.

Several hours after the game, the Rockies released a statement, proclaiming their disgust at the incident and promising a full investigation.

Despite all the cameras at the game, the fan in question was not captured on screen. However, it was clear that they were on the first base side, especially given how the other fans in the area were looking in that direction with disgust.

Over the years, there have been reports of fans hurling racial slurs at black players. Former Orioles outfielder Adam Jones had gone off on the treatment he received from Red Sox fans at Fenway Park, a city that has a history of racism towards black athletes.

Sadly, this racism has become more overt over the years. People no longer worry about the repercussions of their actions, feeling that they can say and do whatever they want in the guise of free speech. They feel that it is their right to loudly state their beliefs, no matter how harmful they may be.

But there is no place for such beliefs, either in the ballpark or in life. We are all the same, and to discriminate due to color, orientation, religion, or any other background is appalling. Hopefully, this person will be identified soon, and handed a lifetime ban from major league ballparks.

The Colorado Rockies are investigating an incident where a fan hurled racial slurs at Lewis Brinson. There is no place for that at the ballpark or in society.
