The 2021 season has been a lost year for Cavan Biggio. One of the Toronto Blue Jays bevy of second generation players, Biggio was expected to play an important part in the team’s plans for this season. Instead, injuries have limited his effectiveness, as he has appeared in just 77 games this year.

Toronto had hoped he would be back soon, as he was in the midst of a rehab assignment in Triple-A. Instead, he will be out of action once again, suffering an elbow injury on Friday while diving for a ball.

Toronto Blue Jays need to focus on future for Cavan Biggio

Between a sprained cervical spine ligament and the back tightness that had led to this most recent stint on the Injured List, it is not a surprise that Biggio struggled this year. He had produced a .215/.316/.350 batting line in his 290 plate appearances, hitting seven homers and ten doubles. Biggio had also stolen just three bases this year, as those back issues had kept him from being able to use his speed as a weapon.

His latest injury is certainly not the type of news that the Blue Jays needed. They have been struggling to remain in the postseason chase, 11.5 games out in the AL East and 4.5 back in the Wild Card hunt entering Monday’s action. Getting Biggio back and healthy could have made a tremendous difference.

Instead, this injury is expected to sideline Biggio for some time. With just over a month left in the season, there may not be enough time for him to heal and to get back into game shape. At this point, the best option would be to simply shut Biggio down and focus on the future.

There are some question marks on the Blue Jays roster for next year. Marcus Semien, who had taken over at second base, is a free agent. Biggio could be a perfect option to take over at the position if he is healthy, but that has to be the case first.
