It was a rather comical scene on Tuesday. After Javier Baez scored the game winning run, the New York Mets‘ grounds crew were out on the diamond, scoring the field for his missing earring. Team president Sandy Alderson went down to the field to aid in the search, and the team got their analytics department involved, as they watched his dash home to try to determine when the earring was lost.
This seemed to be a great deal of overkill for a lost piece of jewelry. Then we learned that the earring was worth an absolutely astronomical amount.
New York Mets infielder Javier Baez loses earring worth price of a house
At this point, Baez and the Mets may have just been happy to win a game. They have dropped into free fall, both in the standings and on the diamond. Baez himself had been in the crosshairs after he admitted that the Mets’ thumbs down celebration was a way to boo their fans.
This time, Baez is making headlines for another ridiculous reason. While players are wearing their chains and jewelry on the diamond, one has to imagine that the truly expensive stuff is being left in the locker room. Wearing such pricey items while playing carries the risk of their being lost or broken.
That is something that Baez has discovered. His earring is still lost, and could be anywhere in the dirt or the grass. There may not even be enough metal for metal detector to pick up, leaving someone’s eyes as the only hope. Likewise, it is possible that some ant now has a rather valuable bauble inside of its anthill.
Perhaps that earring will be found and returned to Baez. Perhaps that earring has been found, and someone is now able to send their child to college or is going to purchase a new house. Or perhaps it is lost forever, with Baez learning the expensive lesson that he probably should not wear someone’s home value on his ear.
The New York Mets grounds crew and Sandy Alderson were searching for Javier Baez’s earring. Now that we know its value, that search is understandable.
