Los Angeles Dodgers: Yasiel Puig has reaction to MLB embracing bat flips
For years, Yasiel Puig was considered to be a hothead, someone whose passion for the game was regarded as problematic. The Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder would perform some epic bat flips, chirp at opponents, and was willing to fight literally anyone who came after his teammates. That passion was regarded as problematic, with Puig currently playing in Mexico.
However, there has been a shift as Major League Baseball has begun to embrace these personalities and bat flips. Understandably, Puig has a reaction to that change in perception.
Former Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig understandably confused
Puig had long been considered somewhat problematic. His behavior was different than what fans and front office members were used to as he let his emotions shine through. It gave Puig a human element, but it also made him someone that was controversial at the time, a lightning rod for criticism and someone that others would point to as an example of what was wrong in the game.
Despite the league and teams embracing those personalities now, it is questionable as to whether or not Puig will get another look in the majors. While he is performing well in Mexico, he also needed to show that he could be a model citizen and teammate. Considering that he ignited a brawl when he was hit by a pitch, that has not been the case.
It is somewhat confusing that Puig has not been able to get another major league offer despite those actions. His anger has typically been brought to the surface when it comes to defending himself and teammates. He has also been a productive hitter in the majors, posting a 122 OPS+ with 132 homers and 159 doubles in 3376 plate appearances. Even if he is not a superstar, he is still a better outfielder than what some teams are sending out.
Maybe Puig will get that chance once again. As the league is starting to celebrate their players actually having fun on the diamond, Puig could get another look. A team looking to improve their outfield could certainly do a lot worse. Otherwise, we may see more of these reaction videos.
