New York Mets hopes may have taken another major blow
There have been many reasons as to why the New York Mets have been a disappointment this season. The offense has not produced at the level they would seem to be capable of. Injuries had caused havoc on the roster. The coaching staff has been questionable, with changes likely to occur in the offseason. However, things were starting to turn around, as the Mets had won five consecutive games heading into Saturday and still had time to make a move towards a playoff spot.
Those hopes took a potential blow in the first game of their doubleheader. Brandon Nimmo left the game after the first inning as he injured himself running.
Brandon Nimmo a potentially huge loss for New York Mets
Nimmo had been amongst the numerous Mets to be injured this season, missing approximately two months of the season due to a detached hand ligament. He was part of that collection that were all on the Injured List at the same time, leaving the team to their fifth option in center field and an outfield that could not be recognized without a program.
Although he is not regarded at the same level as some of the other members of the Mets’ lineup, Nimmo has been one of their best hitters this season. His 131 OPS+ heading into Saturday ranks second on the Mets amongst any player with at least 100 plate appearances, trailing only J.D. Davis.
Unsurprisingly, Nimmo has made a major impact upon the lineup when he has been healthy. He has five homers and 15 doubles in his 318 plate appearances while drawing 50 walks. His respectable power, strong on base skills, and ability to make solid contact are all areas that the Mets need.
The Mets certainly have to hope that the tight hamstring is just a minor tweak. Even if he was to be placed on the Injured List for the ten day minimum, it could make a major difference in their already slim playoff hopes. This could be the loss that they cannot afford.
